THE Albany and Classic Motorcycle weekend has become something of a pilgrimage for lovers of vintage bikes.
Now in its twenty-third year, the event from October 31 to November 2, gives owners the opportunity to rev the cobwebs off their cherished machines and spectators the chance to view rare and unusual bikes from around the region.
The weekend starts on Friday, October 31, with a street parade.
Bikes will assemble at the Old Gaol from 3.30pm before being escorted off by the Radio-West car and police.
The parade, which travels along Stirling Terrace, up York Street around the monument and back down to the Old Gaol, is open to any rider with a road licensed motorcycle.
The Motorcycle Show on Saturday morning is an opportunity for anyone with a bike to show off their pride and joy.
Participants are asked to have their machines in position on Stirling Terrace well before 9am when the show is opened to the public.
The show will also feature motorcycle dealer displays and a performance by Denmark blues band BluManna from 10am to 12.30pm.
The Albany Volunteer Fire Brigade, the financial beneficiary from this year’s event, will be adding to the entertainment with a car demonstration.
Souvenirs of the weekend include polo shirts and windcheaters, printed with the 2008 logo drawn by celebrated artist Alex Hill.
Entries for the afternoon poker run will be taken between 8am and 11.45am.
The poker run will take two forms – a short and long course – with a cost of $10 per person, regardless of whether they are riding or a pillion passenger.
Anyone paying the fee will be entitled to an individual poker hand and afternoon tea.
Both runs will finish at the Albany Rifle Club with tea donated by Dylan’s on the Terrace.
Sunday’s ever-popular hill climb will see 100 competitors meet at Apex Drive on Mt Clarence.
This timed event is only open to pre-1980 motorcycles and all riders are either members of the Albany Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club or from another vintage bike clubs in WA.
Competitors ride off in pairs and the rider who comes closest to his or her nominated time is the winner.
Entry to the hill climb is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12 and pensioners.
