KARTING enthusiasts from across Western Australia descended on Albany at the weekend.
More than 130 drivers participated in the fiercely fought final round of the annual South Eastern Zone Championships.
Albany Kart Club president Scott Else said the 591-metre bitumen track provided a challenging course for go-karters of all skill levels.
“This is a higher level of competition for some of our local members who have only participated in club rounds before,” Else said.
There were plenty of thrills and spills with five rollovers being recorded - one driver flipped his kart three times before ending up in the grass and breaking two ribs.
Local karters put in some impressive driving, with Graham Donald taking second place in the Sportsman 125 Heavy class and Anthony Perella coming third.
The midgets competition, for young beginner drivers, saw one of the biggest fields of the weekend.
“Most other races had 10 or 12 drivers, so to have 20 karts compete in this field was huge,” AKC publicity officer Ray Panizza said.
“Young Mitchell Perella finished fifth in the race, which was another fantastic result for the club,” he said.
“The event was an extreme success for the club, a lot of hard work went into getting this weekend prepared.”
