Criterium ends season

2/10/2008 9:14:00 AM
ALBANY Cycling Club recently held its championship series Criterium race in fine weather.

With only a blustery wind and each other to contend with, riders were all set for an exciting contest.

The men’s vets and super-vets raced 20 minutes of the Eyre Park circuit, completing 13 laps of the 975metre course.

Geoff Cass rode strongly to take out the super-vets, while in the vets it was a two-man race between Graham Forte and Geoff Barnes.

By getting into the last corner first, Forte made it impossible for Barnes to pass and recorded a good win.

Forte had the fastest lap with a time of 1minute 30seconds, recording an average speed of 39kph.

In the men’s open race, riders were required to cover 20 laps of the Eyre Park course.

With both riders in great form, it was anticipated the highlight would be the battle between Mark Bailey and Rowan Burton.

It didn’t take long before Bailey attacked and with Burton chasing hard, the other riders soon dropped off.

First to go were Nathan Hull and John Szwecow, then two laps later Greg Connell succumbed to the pressure.

Greg Newton was able to hang on and rode strongly, occasionaly taking the lead.

Going into the the last lap, Bailey, Burton, Newton and Connell - who had managed to rejoin the group - were keeping a close eye on each other.

At 800 metres from the finish line and what would normally be too early for the sprint, Burton pounced, catching Bailey by surprise.

Burton held his advantage all the way to the line in a very impressive show of strength, with an average speed of 46.5kph on his fastest lap of 1minute 18seconds.

The club’s season drew to a close after Saturday’s series of races which saw Greg Newton take the Open Championship, Mark Rimmel win the Men’s Vets, Jacqui Grieve the Women’s Vets and Sophie Curtis the Open Women’s Championship.

14/11/2008 | There isn't any doubt any more about whether Deputy PM, Julia Gillard, has the killer instinct. The problem tends more to be how to drag her off the victim's body.
