Carnival's big splash

10/07/2008 12:17:00 PM
A TOTAL of 246 swimmers from around the State descended on Albany at the weekend for the 2008 SunSmart Albany Short Course Carnival.

The home team had the second-largest contingent with 36 competitors.

The Albany Swim Club event was the first test of the revamped leisure and aquatic centre.

Competitors and their supporters gave the facility the thumbs up as they easily packed into the grandstand and extra seating placed at the end of the pool.

There were many standout performances from the Albany swimming team.

Dean Birss (12) recorded a personal best in every one of his six races, while Kiara Atkins won gold in the 50m women’s open event in another personal best time.

Another highlight was the middle-distance 400m freestyle race, where 11 club members achieved personal bests, one by 20 seconds.

Youngsters Brett Deadman and Jacson Robb took gold and silver respectively in the U13 boys freestyle.

The U14 boys’ team also secured golds in the 4x50m medley and freestyle relays.

Albany Swim Club president Brendan Robb said for the team to have won one relay race would have been fantastic, but to win two was awesome.

“We really had a great weekend,” Robb said.
