NET Set Go, Netball Australia’s initiative for children aged 5 to 10 years, got under way in Albany on Saturday.
Coordinator Mel Miller and her assistants, a group of Great Southern Grammar girls, did a fantastic job coaching one group of girls, while Melissa Joy and Royals looked after a second group.
During the season, close to 100 youngsters will participate in Net Set Go, which is designed to introduce beginners to the sport, with an emphasis on fun and skill development.
The B1 game between Narrikup 7 and Kangas 5 was a closely fought encounter.
Narrikup got away to an early lead in the first quarter with some great attacking play by Makayla Ogden and Lauren Damm.
The next three quarters were very even and the result could have gone either way.
Mariah Woods played an excellent game for Kangas whilst Narrikup’s Rachael Holden was brilliant in defence, intercepting many Kangas’ moves towards the goals.
Narrikup won the match 17-15.
In the A2 division, Jokers 4 took on Kangas 2.
This game saw two very speedy teams get off to a quick start that kept opposing defences on their toes.
Although pressured by Jokers’ tall defenders, Kangas worked the ball around to their advantage, with great work from the wing attack who held space around the goal circle.
The final score saw Kangas take the game 33-28.
A Coaches in the Field clinic will be held this Sunday from 1pm to 4pm at ALAC.
The cost of the clinic is $10 and is open to anybody interested in learning about coaching netball.
Members’ training is now in full swing, with just two training sessions left before the girls head off to Perth to represent Albany in the Smarter than Smoking Association Carnival at the end of the month.
