YOUNG Mt Barker forward Ben Saunders continued his remarkable debut season when he booted his way into the record books with another five goals against North Albany at Frost Park on Sunday.
Saunders has now kicked 28 goals from just five league games to go with his 71 goals in 15 colts games in 2008.
The record for the most number of goals in a single GSFL colts season was previously held by Ian Waugh who kicked 63 goals for North Albany in 1996.
It also eclipses the old Southern Districts Football League record of 70 goals kicked by Peter Mayfield for Royals in 1972.
The 16-year-old Saunders has shown remarkable poise and accuracy in front of goal.
If he continues this form he should register his 100th GSFL goal for the season against the Denmark/Walpole colts side on Saturday.
In the league games Saunders has played for the Bulls, he has kicked 28 of their 49 majors – a remarkable feat for one player.
When asked about what sets Saunders apart from other players his age, Mt Barker coach Greg Bunker said he read the ball well and got himself into good positions.
“Some players are just born with that natural gene that allows them to excel at sport, and Ben is one of those kids,” Bunker said.
“He is very level-headed and is obviously a star of the future.”
The Bulls hope Saunders can produce similar results when they take on Denmark this week at McLean Park in an effort to pinch an unlikely finals’ berth.
