WNBL in Albany

22 Oct, 2009 10:00 AM
SOME of Australia’s best female basketball players were on show last Saturday night when the National Women’s Basketball League (WNBL) came to town.

In what was to be a fiery showcase at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre, the Go for 2&5 Perth Lynx came up against the Adelaide Link Lightning which comprised four Australian Opals and one New Zealand Tall Ferns.

Not to be outdone, the Lynx had WNBA draftee Danielle Campbell and Texas A&M College standout Takia Starks along with their strong contingent of WA’s best female basketball talent.

The Lightning went in as favourites with a 2-0 record, but the Lynx also had an impressive result against championship favourite Sydney in round one.

The teams were evenly matched and played strength-to-strength, point-to-point but it was the Lightning which was too strong in the end.

Leading at every quarter the Lightning walked away with a 93 to 87 victory.

Lightning guard Angela Marino was the standout of the game with 32 points, 35 minutes playing time and six rebounds.

With her quick running, multiple drives and shots at goal she provided lots of opportunity for her team.

Lynx centre Danielle Campbell used all her 193cm to tower over her opponents and gained an impressive 19 rebounds.

The games Most Valuable Players went to Lightning number 11 Angela Marino and Lynx (23) Kate Malpass.

The referees in charge of the game were David Bull, Clayton Bird and Bryn Arnold, and they regularly called fouls throughout the game both on and off the ball.

Basketball WA chief executive officer Rick Smith said the second regional game for the Lynx was a success.

“This was an exciting opportunity to take what is considered to be one of the best leagues in the world to the regional centres,” he said.

“The people of Albany have a great passion for basketball and the recent SBL game proved that.

“We are looking forward to assisting in the growth and promotion of women’s basketball in the Albany region.”

The Department of Sport and Recreation funded the game through the Country Sports Enrichment Scheme. It was also part of the City of Albany’s Sports-Fest weekend.
