FIVE football academies from across the region battled it out in the inaugural Great Southern Footy Championships in Albany last Wednesday.

About 100 Year Eight and Nine students from the Yule Brook Academy (Perth), South-East Academy (Esperance), South-West Academy (Bunbury), Gilmore Academy (Quana), and the Great Southern Football Academy (Albany) were involved in the carnival.

Each team played four games on the day, with Yule Brook FC the overall champions, Southwest second and the Great Southern third.

Great Southern Football Academy’s Phil Gilbert said everyone showed good sportsmanship.

“Things can only get bigger and better next year,” he said.

The Great Southern Football Academy players named in the All-Star Team included Eric Hayward, William Rogers and Codie Benell.
