THE newly-formed Albany Districts Rugby Union Association kicked off its season with a scratch match at Centennial Oval last Saturday.
The association is hoping that acquiring a permanent playing field where all games will be held this season will attract more players as the season progresses.
Rugby has found it difficult to attract players in the past with many games having to be played away from Albany.
Albany Lions Rugby president Murray (Muz) Hooper said that initially, games would be played with three sides of about 10 after enough players registered their interest.
“As the season progresses we will see numbers increase as word gets out there that we have a comp in Albany and Denmark,” he said.
“It’s now up to the playing group to deliver and play good, strong, disciplined, competitive rugby.”
The next scratch games will be played at Centennial Oval from 2pm on April 25, with games every Saturday in May leading up to the Country Carnival in Esperance on May 30.
