Royals warm-up for finals

20 Aug, 2009 09:22 AM
ROYALS warmed up for their eleventh straight finals campaign with a win over Railways in Round 19 of the Great Southern Football League last Sunday.

In atrocious conditions at Tigerland, the ladder leaders burst away in the final term to win 15.18 (108) to 7.3 (45).

Despite a strong effort by the Tigers, Royals dominated the final term to run away with the game.

Justin Benson kicked three goals for Railways as the home side looked in control early, before Royals managed the next four goals of the game to take the lead in the second term.

Scoring was tough and the game became scrappy at times, with players battling in the slippery conditions.

A late goal to the home side reduced the margin to just four points at the long break.

Both sides managed two goals each in the third term, but it became evident that Royals were getting on top of their younger opponents.

Only inaccurate kicking prevented them from being further in front, with a late goal by the Tigers reducing the lead to just 11 points at the final change.

Any chance Railways had of pulling off a victory was dashed early in the final term as Royals finally started applying pressure on the scoreboard.

Aaron Williams finished off a good day with five goals as Royals players appeared to be queing up to get their names on the score sheet.

The final margin blew out to 63 points as Royals kicked eight goals to one, in what was a disappointing end to an otherwise good day for the Tigers.

Best players for Royals were Chris Denney who won plenty of the ball, Danny Delcahno, James McRae and Caden Allison, while for Railways’ Scott Powell, Michael Cramer and Sam Stone played well.

Royals now have a final-round bye with a chance to freshen up before their second semi-final clash with North Albany at Centennial Oval next weekend.

Railways finish their home-and-away season when they travel to McLean Park to take on Denmark-Walpole on Sunday.

The Magpies lost their twelfth game in a row when they succumbed by 74 points to Mt Barker at Frost Park on Saturday.

The Bulls kicked five goals to one in each of the opening two quarters to virtually close the gate on the game by half time.

Missing a number of key players including Sam Lehman who suffered a shoulder injury against Royals the previous week, the Bulls still managed to find avenues to goal throughout the day.

Ben Saunders finished the game with eight goals to move to 38 for the season just two behind Aaron Williams who will not play this week due to Royals having the bye.

Eight other Bulls kicked majors as the Bulls won the game 16.20 (116) to Denmark’s 5.12 (42).

Best players for the home side as well as Saunders included Clinton Hambley, veteran Kim Lange and Murray Anning who played his 200th game for Mt Barker.

For the Magpies, Andrew Dempster, Tyler Stone and Coby Ladwig (three goals) were the better players.

The Bulls now travel to Collingwood Park to play North Albany in what should be another entertaining encounter.

Last time the two sides met, Mt Barker came from 32 points down in the last term to nearly snatch a victory in the dying minute.

In the reserves, Royals beat Railways by 51 points, while the Bulls secured a finals berth by defeating Denmark by 22 points.

North Albany maintained top spot on the colts ladder with a 24-point win over the Albany Sharks, while Royals beat Railways by 32 points.

Denmark had a rare win, defeating the Bulls at Frost Park with skipper Luke Ryan kicking four goals.
