Rare feat celebrated this weekend

16 Jul, 2009 09:19 AM
IT is rare for players to reach 200 games in the Great Southern Football League.

It is rarer that two players from the same club achieve the feat in the same season.

Therefore it makes it extremely rare that two players from the same club achieve the feat on the same day.

That is the situation in Mt Barker this Sunday where Bulls’ veterans Nathan Skinner and Kim Lange will run out together for their 200th GSFL games against North Albany.

Both life members at the club, the duo has been part of the furniture at Frost Park since the mid-90s and have both been through the good times and bad during their careers.

Lange has won two fairest and bests for the Bulls and was also a key player in the Bulls’ 1996 grand final win.

Premiership success has eluded Skinner to date with losses in 1999 and 2005, but the 30-year-old has been a part of the GSFL Landmark Carnival side for 11 straight years.

Both players have differing styles on the field, with Skinner a running and long-kicking defender.

Midfielder Lange gets under packs and effectively utilises handball or a precision left-foot kick both with great effect.

When asked what playing 200 games meant to them, both players admitted they had never really thought about it.

Both said they werelucky to get there and were quick to pay tribute to the other.

“Kim has probably been one of the best footballers at our club,” Skinner said.

“Coming from Frankland and doing all of that travelling to get to nearly every training and game I reckon is a bloody good effort.

“He has certainly racked up a few kilometres and his dedication to the club could never be questioned.”

Lange was delighted for his team-mate.

“All credit must go to him for reaching the 200,” Lange said.

“He deserves the accolades that come his way and there is no doubting he is a very good player for us.”

Lange admitted that at 31 years he “was a one-year-at-a-time proposition”.

As to 2010, Lange said he would “see what happens after getting through this year”.

Skinner has plans to go on well into the future.

“I should have another six years in me if Muz (team-mate Murray Anning) can still be playing at 36,” Skinner said.

“I will keep playing while I can and until I have decided I have had enough, but there are no plans to retire in the near future.”

Both players know that a premiership might be just out of reach in 2009.

“It would be nice to play finals and upset a few teams along the way,” Lange said.

He said his side was keen to test the reigning premiers this weekend.

“It’s been a while since we have beaten them and we need to string four quarters together to knock them off.

“If we can manage to do that, then who knows what’s in store this Sunday?”

When it comes to this week’s game and the impending milestones, Skinner summed the situation up well.

“We are pretty good mates and to play our 200th game at home together on the same day is a pretty special thing.”
