Locals continue to shine at motocross

VISITING riders dominated the South West interclub motocross event in Albany on Sunday.

But Albany Motocross Club riders showed they will soon be a force to be reckoned with after some strong placings.

The fourth in the interclub series attracted 147 riders from clubs in Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Manjimup and Mandurah to compete against Denmark and Albany motocross riders at Atwell Park.

Riders competed in three races on the day, collecting points to determine the final winner.

Clubs also gain points for each race to determine the season’s South West championship.

Manjimup’s James Craig was the favourite for the 450cc open event after showing great form and he didn’t disappoint, leading all the way.

But hot on his wheel were two Albany riders, Brodie Black and Dion Knuiman.

Both Albany youngsters showed they have a great future in the sport, pushing their older opponent all the way. Todd Knuiman and Matt Kingdon also put in a big effort.

Black’s overall second place on the day gave him the ideal preparation for the senior state titles in Bunbury next week.

Craig showed great speed and control over the recently nationally-accredited track which was softened by overnight rain making conditions ideal.

Albany club members also performed well in the smaller divisions, ensuring the club will continue to get stronger.

Lots of local juniors turned out for the 85-150cc class, making it the biggest so far in the series.

Natasha Pierce showed the boys how it was done, Jesse Attwell had some great results and Ryder Smith also did well.

Volunteers put in many hours to ensure the success of the Albany event and the club is well supported by local businesses.

Albany will host its next interclub event on September 21.
