Hawks swoop from the desert

07 May, 2009 04:19 PM
GREAT Southern Grammar was the venue for a friendly game of footy between the school and a visiting indigenous team last Friday.

The Desert Hawks, who hail from Tjuntjuntjara, 700km north east of Kalgoorlie, arrived at the school after two big days travelling in a 1981 Hino bus.

The Hawks used the match as preparation for their Monday afternoon game against the Clontarf Football Academy at ASHS.

The Tjuntjuntjara Community, which has a regular population of approximately 150 people, was created around 20 years ago on land traditionally owned by the Spinifex People.

Since then, Tjuntjuntjara has developed into an important centre for the regional cultural cycles of Western Desert life, and has witnessed many people with a traditional attachment return to the area.
