Good masters' results

28 May, 2009 10:26 AM
ALBANY came a respectable sixth at the recent WA Masters State Swimming Championships.

About 289 competitors from 22 clubs took part in the championships at Perth’s Challenge Stadium on May 16 and 17.

The competition, with 20 events totalling 1,245 individual swims, was won by Osborne Park with 1,919 points followed by Claremont on 1,352 points and the Stadium Snappers who finished third with 1193.

Albany which has slowly worked its way up the masters results list over the years had a close tussle with Geraldton which finished fourth in the competition and won the Country Clubs Trophy.

The lead changed several times over the two days.

There was very little between the top three country teams, with Geraldton finishing on 877 points, fifth-placed Somerset on 868 and Albany on 806.

Seventh position went to West Coast on 643 points.

Albany’s top scores came from the oldies.

Marg Feldman, (80-84 years), excelled in backstroke and breaststroke and Tony Stanton, (75-79 years) obtained great results in butterfly, breaststroke and the individual medley.

Both won all their six events, giving each the maximum 60 points and received their respective age group trophies.

New club swimmer Clair Moran, (25-29 years) also had a successful competition, scoring 57 points with three firsts and three second placings.

Other high achievers were Ben Kagi (40-44 years), who scored 42 points with two firsts and two seconds, Jim Bolger (60-64 years), with two firsts and one second, Shiralee Hanna (25-29 years), one first and three thirds and Sandy Laurens (45-49 years), two thirds.

Albany Masters swimmers also had some impressive results at the club nights earlier in the month, with a total of 14 personal bests being achieved.

Barbara Wilson and Maureen Hanna scored three apiece, two went to Bruce Wilson, while Shiralee Hanna, Esther Marklew, Katie Watson, Janet Van Kooten, Alex House and Ben Kagi all gained one each.
