ALBANY’S most talented taekwondo students are set to travel to Perth to compete in the Australian World Taekwondo Federation (AWTF) Championships.
Nine juniors and seniors from Rawlins Taekwondo Academy will compete for various titles after placing during the State championships in July.
Faisal Suryadi, Kelly Donnelly and Mirelle Ekstrom will participate in the senior competition.
The junior divisions will consist of David Knock, Johanna Hall, Barry Corbett, Zandalee Arthur, Shianne Arthur and Mikayla Knock.
Teacher Kristy Compton said everyone went to the championships to compete in full contact marital arts.
“They compete in their age, belt and weight divisions,” she said.
“The championships will be used as a way for kids to get to the junior worlds and for the senior divisions to go on to the national training squad and possible selection for the Olympic team.”
Ms Compton said Rawlins Academy offered traditional, self-defence and sports taekwondo.
“We get a lot of kids coming into the school learning self defence, self esteem and confidence.
“It’s such a gift when they come in looking at the ground and, after a few classes, can now hold a conservation. We all get something out of it.”
People can help the kids get to the championships by buying a sausage at their next fundraiser at Bunnings on Sunday, October 18, from 9am to 2pm.
