Express delivery at season opener

12 Nov, 2009 10:25 AM
VETERAN horseman Dixie Solly got his Albany racing season off to a perfect start on Sunday.

His seven-year-old Speed Week gelding Weekly Express opened proceedings with a three-quarter length win in the Chris Wolfe Memorial Sprint (1,100m).

Weekly Express, ridden by Talia Moar, sat back in the field and was too quick in the dash to the line.

Kyra Yuill was unable to get Carbineer clear until late in the race, and battled on for second.

However, the apprentice made amends for trainer Max Hockey later in the day when she piloted All Spots to victory in the Haynes Robinson Handicap (1,100m).

Yuill had the Purewin five-year-old right on the pace before running away from the challengers to score by more than two lengths, defeating Darryl Ward’s Cummings and Justin Parsons’ Mr Magnificent.

The Steve Wolfe-David Chipman combination also enjoyed the return to Albany with a winning double.

Wolfe unearthed a potential star when Briello produced an amazing burst of speed in the shadows of the post to win the Mungrup Stud Maiden (1,100m).

There was no gap in the straight for Briello and Chipman but when the opening came inside the final 100 metres, the pair pounced.

Briello grabbed John Askevold’s favourite Jeneviv and Annie Crump’s Designer Diva.

Jeneviv’s rider Kelly Davidson was later suspended for 18 days for careless riding after she caused interference when attempting to get clear at the 250m mark.

The Wolfe-Chipman double was completed in the final event when Canny Besain was a comfortable winner over Paul Hunter’s Key To Target and Askevold’s Chaddie.

Shaun Meeres also recorded a riding double when he won the Graham Manley Auto Repairs Handicap with Gerry Hughes’s Movie World.

He was also aboard Trevor Kiddie’s Carrallen Steel when he won the Impressive Racing Handicap.

Paige Kenney justified the long trip from Perth when her mare Boundary Street broke maiden status.

Rider Takahide Ikenushi took control mid-race and held on to beat the Hughes stablemates Eternal Advice and Silver Business.
