Como knockout Grammar

22 Oct, 2009 09:58 AM
THE state’s top two school hockey teams competed for the David Bell Cup at ALAC hockey field last week.

The nail-biting game saw Como Secondary College (CSC) walk away victors over Great Southern Grammar (GSG) with a score of 3-1.

The game was played as part of a knockout competition for school-aged male hockey teams.

Through school competitions, and a semi-final played in September, the top teams fought it out during Monday’s final.

Both teams were evenly matched but CSC gained several powerful possessions and shots at goal.

Como was first off the mark, scoring the game’s first goal at the 25-minute mark.

The first half finished with a score of 0-1 but CSC again scored at both the 48 and 66-minute marks to bring its final score to three.

Mitchell Bradbury was the lone GSG goal-scorer with just few minutes to spare before the final siren.

At the end of the game, the Most Valuable Player medallions were presented to David Ogden from CSC and Todd McCabe from GSG.

The competition is played to honour David Bell who is an ex-Australian captain from WA and current WAIS high performance manager.

He also coached the Hockeyroos at two Olympic games and was captain of the men’s team when they won the World Cup in 1986.
