Colts in stunning win

16 Jul, 2009 09:24 AM
THE Great Southern Football League Colts had a better result than their League counterparts and were in good shape early after two wins on the first day at Arena Joondalup.

They defeated Mortlock by 52 points, with Denmark’s Beau LeFort kicking four goals in a best-on-ground performance, and the Wheatbelt Falcons by 55 points, to sit on top of the B Section Colts ladder.

On Friday at Claremont Oval they met the same two sides again and were in sparkling form, defeating Mortlock by 45 points with Tyler Stone kicking four goals.

Stone backed up that effort with another four majors as the GSFL defeated the Falcons by 15 points in a low-scoring game.

The grand final was played at Claremont Oval on Saturday and the GSFL continued where they left off to work their way to a handy early lead.

Warwick Proudlove gathered plenty of the ball and Dylan Morgan and Dave Parker also provided headaches for their young opponents.

Jeremy McGovern was often on the end of their good work and he again found the goals to finish with seven majors for the day.

Stone capped off a magnificent carnival with three goals and was named in the Colts Landmark All-Stars along with Proudlove, McGovern and Darryl Burke, while Beau LeFort was named best player of the tournament.

Team manager David Flick said the carnival was a huge result for the young charges.

“It was a very successful few days and the boys played really well,” he said.

“They stuck at the task and there were no passengers amongst the tight-knit group so we are all really pleased.”

Flick paid tribute to coach Gary Buitenhuis in his role with the developing players.

“He is a really good operator and highly respected coach so credit must go to him once again,” Flick said.

Next year the GSFL Colts may nominate for A Section where the South West Football League won this year’s grand final with a 65-point victory over Kimberley Spirit.
