Volunteers work through the night

14 May, 2009 10:26 AM
ALBANY Weekender Classic Motor Event volunteers will again burn the midnight oil on May 31, turning the city’s CBD into a safe racetrack.

Dozens of volunteers will work all night removing roundabouts and installing concrete and plastic barriers while competitors, officials and spectators are still in bed.

They then return after the event to replace everything removed.

The massive undertaking is supported by the City of Albany which ensures the portability of the concrete roundabouts and supplies staff and vehicles.

2009 Albany Classic Motor Event organising committee is in the final stages of planning for the event, meeting on a regular basis.

Committee chairman Phil Shephard said the local volunteers who set up and break down the track early Sunday morning and after the event on Sunday night played an important role in the success of the event.

Mr Shephard said more help was always needed and anyone willing to lend a hand should contact Ken Stone at Ken Stone Motor Trimmers on 9841 6688.

The Classic kicks off on Saturday, May 30, with the Mt Clarence Hillclimb.
