Time for fun and games

23/10/2008 9:58:00 AM
ALBANY’S seniors are preparing to strut their stuff during BankWest Seniors Week 2008.

Many will be showing off their achievements in demonstrations of exercise and other group activities during Have A Go Day next Tuesday, October 28, at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

Others who are not involved get the chance to try out something that might be of interest.

Albany Over 50s Recreation Association president Ray Crocker said seniors will learn and experience for themselves that taking part in regular exercise and fitness classes or learning a new skill can be enjoyable.

“It’s all about having a lot of fun,” he said.

“One of the most popular activities is going for a ride on a Harley Davidson motorbike. That will be available again.”

Have A Go Day is organised by the Albany Over 50s Recreation Association with financial support from City of Albany, Council on the Ageing (WA), LotteryWest and the Department for Communites.

Held every two years, Have A Go Day celebrates the lives of Albany’s seniors, not only for the work they have done in the past but what many still do in the community.

Senior groups will be hoping to attract more people to their groups, ensuring they remain active, and despite their increasing age, take on a new challenge.

As a result, ALAC is expected to again be filled with plenty of noise from 9am to 1.30pm, with laughter being the dominant sound.

Displays will be provided by a variety of seniors groups and government departments.

Many are active but others take on that timeless quality with little effort needed.

Mr Crocker urged all seniors to attend and have some fun at the same time.

He said there would be something for everyone.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
