Surf club additions

16 Jul, 2009 09:12 AM
A PROPOSAL for additions and alterations at the Albany Surf Life Saving Club is to be considered by Albany City Council next Tuesday.

The surf club modifications are expected to be undertaken in two stages with the first stage including a new first aid room, canteen extension, and extension of the existing boat shed with a first storey observation deck above.

The second stage will consist of the conversion of the ground floor function room to provide additional storage and for other floor space to be used for education and training.

The extension would require removal of a Norfolk Island pine tree. Despite the row of trees at Ellen Cove being listed in Council’s Municipal Heritage Inventory, removal of one tree was considered acceptable from a heritage aspect and will provide greater visibility of the beach for safety and surf patrols.

The club has requested that Council refund the planning application fees ($2,242) submitted with the application.

The City has already provided $200,000 to the project through its annual budget.

The club is still waiting for the State Government to commit to its September 2008 election promise and provide $550,000 to complete the final stage of the clubrooms.
