Submariners remembered

04 Jun, 2009 09:32 AM
THE regular ringing of a bell at a memorial service on Sunday highlighted the large number of United State servicemen who lost their lives aboard submarines in WWII.

Many visited Albany which had become a safe port during those turbulent years.

The US Submariners Memorial Service at Princess Royal Fortress paid tribute to submariners “Still on Patrol”, while at the same time recognising Albany’s role in the war.

A total of 31 US submarines visited Albany after 1942 to resupply and to provide rest and recreation for crew, with the tenders Holland then Pelias, and five submarines based at the port.

Sunday’s service was attended by serving members of the US Navy, including Commander Paul Varnadore who read the formal address.

The family of a former US serviceman who made his home in Perth attended en masse. Nineteen members of Alfred “Andy” Andersen’s family came from Perth to commemorate his life.

Mr Andersen moved from America in 1961 with his family, including his Australian wife Noreen. He died in 2000.
