Shearer's death charge upgrade

10/07/2008 11:49:00 AM
THE charge of grevious bodily harm handed out to a Gnowangerup man has been upgraded to unlawful killing.

Edward Ivan William Cheeseman (22) appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Tuesday to hear the new charge, but did not enter a plea.

Cheeseman and a 16-year-old who cannot be named became involved in a fight with fellow shearer Shaun Michael Ian Price while drinking at their Gnowangerup living quarters in early June.

Police allege during the fight, 27-year-old Price received several blows to the head before falling to the floor unconscious.

It is also alleged Price was kicked while lying on the ground.

Cheeseman was originally granted bail on a personal undertaking of $10,000 and a $5,000 surety paid by his employer.

In light of the new charge, Magistrate Elizabeth Hamilton made amendments to Cheeseman’s bail.

He must report to police by telephone every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with his employer present, not drink alcohol to excess of 0.5 per cent, avoid licensed premises and be subject to random breath tests by police.

Magistrate Hamilton excluded Gnowangerup Golf Club from the bail conditions on recommendation of defence counsel Kevin Prince.
