TWO Albany men arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for allegedly downloading a video of an eight-year-old Russian girl being raped have appeared in court.
Bejay Yap Mercado (30) and Leslie Marvin Sobik (21) made brief appearances in Albany Magistrates Court on Tuesday, but did not enter pleas.
Mercado faces one charge of possessing an indecent or obscene article and two counts of using a carriage service to cause material to be transmitted to a person.
Sobik faces one count of using a carriage service for child pornography material.
A representative from the Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions said the CDPP had been instructed by the AFP to adjourn the men’s cases for a month, as computers seized in raids across Australia were still being investigated.
The men are believed to be among 9000 potential offenders in 92 countries.
AFP Child Protection Operastions teams executed 27 search warrants across Australia last month and expected to make more arrests.
Mercado and Sobik will next appear in Albany Magistrates Court on July 7.
