Police concern over robberies

23 Jul, 2009 02:51 PM
ALBANY police are concerned about a spate of armed robberies targeting vulnerable and elderly shop assistants.

The second armed robbery within two months occurred when a man threatened a 70-year-old woman with a knife at the Marbellup Tuck Shop on South Coast Highway at 6.15pm last Wednesday, July 15.

The man is described as being approximately 6ft tall, of slim build, between 17 – 22 years of age.

He took about $250 in cash from the till.

Police believe the man lives locally as he went to great lengths to disguise his appearance.

“His face was concealed with a large piece of black cloth with eye pieces cut out,” Detective Senior Constable Peter Yuswak said.

“He had a black beanie over the cloth on his head, and wore a long-sleeved shirt and black gloves.”

Sen Const Yuswak said the second armed robbery of a general store was a cause for concern.

“We are concerned they are picking vulnerable people,” he said.

“The store was about to close and the lady was on her own.

“It could be a local.”

Sen Const Yuswak said the woman returned to work the next day but was extremely shaken by what had occurred.

However, she was comforted by many locals who were concerned about the event.

“She was pretty shaken up by the incident,” he said.

“The community has been very supportive.”

Police were waiting to view security vision.

A 63-year-old shop assistant at Albany Highway Supermarket was taken to hospital suffering from shock and given medication to help her sleep after being threatened with a knife in May.

Police arrested a local man after he was identified by the public from the shop’s security camera footage.

Austin Gaffney (37) pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery when he appeared in the Supreme Court last week.
