Police call for action on arson

12 Nov, 2009 09:52 AM
POLICE in the Great Southern have called on the community to take part in the fight against arsonists.

Great Southern Police released its Bush Fire Intervention Strategy this week.

“Apart from the Perth Hills, Denmark has been identified as one area in WA that is in danger when it comes to bushfires,” Senior Sergeant Larry Turner said.

“Because of its location and vegetation, the area is at risk for a catastrophic fire. But places like Walpole, Hopetoun and also Albany and Mt Clarence areas are also at risk.

“If police can control the lighting of deliberate fires then the risk to people and property will be reduced.”

Sen Sgt Turner said the purpose of the strategy was to bring different agencies together and share intelligence.

“Through this exercise we will identify people who have been convicted of lighting fires and in partnership with other agencies put high profile patrols into risk areas.”

Sen Sgt Turner said the community could play a vital part in the strategy by reporting any suspicious activity or deliberate fire-lighting to their local police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Rewards of up to $50,000 are offered for the report of information which leads to the identification and conviction of arsonists.

Great Southern Superintendent Dene Leekong said members of the community could play a vital role in combating arson.

“Anyone driving through bush fire prone areas are strongly urged to contact Crime Stoppers, or their local police if they see any suspicious activity or vehicles in unusual locations,” he said.
