GREAT Southern equestrian Sonja Johnson has fulfilled a lifelong dream by winning selection for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The Great Southern-based Johnson, who was named Australian Event Rider of the Year in 1996 and 2003, will compete with the eventing team on her horse, Ringwould Jaguar.
Johnson has competed in numerous international equestrian events and most recently represented Australia in the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, where she was knocked unconscious on the cross-country course.
The Olympic Games’ equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong.
Two of Johnson’s long-time supporters, Jim and Gussie Saunders, are looking forward to making the trip to see her compete.
The Saunders bred Ringwould Jaguar which, being a stockhorse, is something of a novelty on an international circuit dominated by warmbloods and thoroughbreds.
Joining Johnson on the team are several other ex-Western Australians.
England-based Clayton Fredericks, Germany-based Hayley Beresford and Laurie Lever, who currently resides in Victoria, have won selection.
The Narrogin-raised Beresford is well-known to many young Albany riders.
Beresford was a regular visitor to Albany as an instructor before her move to Europe.
Beresford is a member of the prestigious Isabell Werth team.
