A LONE female runner has smashed the record for running the Bibbulmun Track from Perth by arriving in Albany in 20 days.
Nicki Rehn left Perth on April 5 and arrived in Albany last Friday.
The adventure athlete decided to complete the epic event “just because she could.”
“The last record was set by a man who completed the track in 17 days, but he was fully supported in his effort,” Ms Rehn said.
“This is a female record, but it was done unsupported.”
Surviving on food supplies dropped along the route and carrying a backpack, Ms Rehn dropped 10kg during the effort.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. She wasn’t very happy going to bed after a 54km run without any water or food.
“I got to Giants Hall in the tingle forest, found I had no water and had to backtrack 20 hours to find some,” Ms Rehn said. “There were also a lot of snakes, mainly in the southern half.”
She completed more than a marathon a day for the 18 days, with one day backtracking, and one day’s rest.
Ms Rehn has travelled the world but wanted to try something in her own back yard.
“It was a challenge to do it alone but I achieved my goal. The experience was amazing.”
Originally from Narrogin, Ms Rehn now lives and works in Canada as a teacher.
“I took a 12-month leave of absence, and decided to do something different. Last year I spent five days running across the Mexican desert,” she said.
“But my next challenge will be biking along the 700km Gibb River Road.”
