Musician's top song

24 Sep, 2009 09:30 AM
A LOCAL musician is a finalist in the Western Australian Music Industry Song of the Year Awards.

Simone Keane’s jazz tune, ‘A Wise Man’, was produced locally for the award’s submission by some of the region’s top musicians.

The tune is one of five nominations in the jazz category of the awards to be announced in October.

Keane said ‘A Wise Man’ told the story of a man who lived in Australia in ancient times.

“It’s a magical song, evoking images of inland seas, shape shifting earthquakes, and creatures as tall as trees,” she said.

“The musicians I chose to record the tune help create this ethereal, jazzy feel – Evan Holmes, Bronton Ainsworth, Tim Turnbull, Lez Karski and Joel Barter.

“It is important they be acknowledged. What they produced in the studio was better than I imagined.

“I couldn’t have done it without them.”

The tune was produced by Karski and Kim Lofts.

“It would be nice to win the jazz category, but just to be recognised as a finalist by such a significant organisation as WAM is a huge milestone for me,” Keane said.

“I am very grateful for the nomination.”

The grand prize for Song of the Year is $5,000, with the WAM competition sponsored by Government of WA Health and Mental Health.

Category prize-winners receive $500 cash plus one day of studio recording time. Winners will be announced mid-October.
