SUMMER is welcomed in Albany but it also brings pest problems such as an increase in mosquito numbers.
The City of Albany conducts mosquito control programs in areas where mosquitoes are suspected of breeding and carrying disease.
Despite these programs, Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus will always be a threat as they occur in natural cycles between mosquitoes and animals, and it is simply not possible to eliminate all mosquitoes.
During summer the life cycle from egg to flying adult mosquito takes seven to 10 days.
In comparison, during colder months the life cycle may take several weeks.
The City recommends residents need to take personal measures to reduce the risk of contracting disease and to reduce the breeding of nuisance mosquitoes.
This can be done by removing water holding receptacles, and emptying any water holding items – such as plant pots and bird baths every few weeks will break this cycle.
Avoid being bitten by screening your house, using repellents, covering up in protective clothing and picking the times and places you take part in outdoor activities.
