WORKS by local artists with a mental illness are to be showcased at Albany Hospital as part of the Mindworx art exhibition this week.
All the art has been produced by artists who have at some stage utilised the services of the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) – Great Southern mental health team.
Some have had formal arts training and others are self-taught.
The exhibition has been curated by well-known local artist and mental health nurse, Michael O’Doherty.
Mental health team manager Marcelle Cannon said the exhibition was inspired by mental health clinicians who were impressed by the artistic talents of their patients.
“The exhibition highlights the talents of these artists who work in a range of mediums including paint, gel pens, found objects and poetry,” she said.
“Their achievements are an inspiration to those experiencing mental health issues and to the local community.”
The Mindworx exhibition, which is being held during Mental Health Week, is a joint project between Albany Hospital, Mentally Healthy WA’s Act-Belong-Commit campaign and the Great Southern GP Network.
The exhibition will be open at Albany Hospital from next Monday, October 6, to October 17. Prints will also be displayed in the Off the Wall Gallery at Albany Plaza Shopping Centre from October 14 to November 3.
