ALBANY Farmers Market has won the inaugural “Best Farmers Market in Australia” section in The Vogue Entertaining and Travel Produce Awards for 2008.
The award recognises the people who organise the markets and bring together growers and consumers around Australia.
Market coordinator Ian Haines was in Sydney on Monday to receive the award on behalf of all the farmer members of the market.
“This is fantastic,” he said. “Not only to be considered the best of so many great farmers markets in Australia but to be the first market to receive this award is testimony to the last six years of hard work by all the farmer members who have contributed to the growth and popularity of the weekly market.”
In order to be considered for the award, the markets had to have predominantly fresh food, operate regularly and provide a suitable environment for farmers and food producers to sell farm-origin and associated food products directly to customers.
Mr Haines said this had been the basis of the Albany Farmers Market ethos since day one.
“Only farmers from the Great Southern may sell what they have grown or reared themselves in the market,” he said.
“It is a true fresh food market, presenting quality seasonal product every week, much to the delight and appreciation of locals and visitors.
“A true taste experience of the Great Southern every Saturday morning.”
Market Association chair Howard Shapland said he was delighted with the recognition.
“The commitment and hard work of all producers who farm to supply for the market has been a huge experience and has only been achieved with the incredible response and support of the local community,” he said.
“To receive this award is an acknowledgment and a wonderful recognition for everyone who farms and sells in the market.”
