Local drug dealer imprisoned

26 Nov, 2009 09:38 AM
THE family of a drug dealer wept in Albany’s District Court as he was sentenced to two years jail on Monday.

Adam Michael Trott was sentenced for his role in a drug ring which was smashed when police raided several Albany properties in December 2008 as part of Operation Handstand.

Police charged 13 people on various drug and weapons related counts, including five people for conspiracy to sell or supply a prohibited drug.

The court was told Trott conspired with Michael John Nurse, Jason Colin Wilson, Damon Luke McIntyre, Jillian Louise Udy and Jason Charles Remaj to sell and supply methylamphetamines in Albany and Perth between May and December last year.

Police recorded several phone calls between Trott and others sourcing drugs to sell.

Police raided a home Trott and Wilson shared on December 4 and uncovered a small amount of drugs, scales and cutting agents.

Trott admitted in a video interview he was involved in selling drugs and had used several mobile phones in different people’s names.

During sentencing, the court heard Trott was a mid-level drug supplier because he was sourcing drugs from Nurse before cutting them to on-sell.

“He was not the top of the pyramid but a centrally figure,” said State prosector Ian Marshall.

Judge Henry Wisbey noted Trott had a previous conviction for possession.

“This offence is in a different league to simple possession and an immediate imprisonment is needed,” he said.

Trott’s defence lawyer John O’Connor said his client had an extreme addiction which at times saw him consume up to $1,000 of the drug a day.

“He did it not for greed or profit but to supply his raging habit,” he said.

Wilson and McIntyre received suspended sentences, Nurse received three years for his part and Udy is yet to be sentenced.

Judge Wisbey said substance abuse and drugs were a serious issue facing the community.

“Behaviour of people on these substances cannot be ignored,” he said.

“You were a middle level supplier that was actively involved in the distribution of drugs into the community.

“There was sustained criminality here and an immediate imprisonment should be served.”

Judge Wisbey sentenced Trott to two years on each of the five counts to be served concurrently.
