ALBANY’S Glenn Badger and his navigator Roger Cations surprised everyone with their determination at the 2009 Quit Targa West rally on the weekend.
Despite twice replacing an engine as well as the clutch in their 1972 Escort Mk1, they managed to finish the classic section of the rally.
This was on top of coping with horrendous wet road conditions facing all drivers in the 30 stages that took in Perth and surrounding hills to as far away as Toodyay.
“It took a bit of persistence but we managed to finish,” Mr Badger said.
“We were doing quite well against the big boys too.”
The first engine blew during the prologue stage and the second the next day.
Both were repaired with the help of his father, Ken, and service crew of Adam Dunn, Liam Curtis and Colin Wishart.
“Despite the dramas we had an absolute ball,” he said. “We’re already planning for next year.”
Davyd and Angela Hooper fared much better by winning their class in the modern competition driving a 2006 Honda Integra Type S and by improving their place from 47th to 21st.
There is also the possibility of moving to 19th with disqualifications pending.
“We had no problems with the car until we were returning to Burswood complex after the last stage and lost second gear.
The Hoopers have become regular Targa West competitors, after taking up rallying six years ago.
“It’s a lot of fun, and we did very well,” Mrs Hooper said.
Celebrating its fifth year, the Quit Targa West was held on closed, public roads in Perth and the surrounding shires of Kalamunda, Chittering and Toodyay.
