THE family of a teenage driver injured in a crash last week has called for changes at a dangerous intersection.
Dale Quain (17) was driving on South Coast Highway last Wednesday night when a woman driving on Clydesdale Road failed to give way and the cars collided.
Mr Quain’s Daihatsu Charade was knocked off the road, while the woman’s 4WD came to rest on its side.
Emergency services took an hour to cut the teenager from the car.
He was taken to Albany Hospital with serious leg and facial injuries.
He expects to be released from hospital this weekend. He underwent surgery on Saturday.
The woman driving the 4WD in the accident was treated for head injuries.
The teenager’s father, Steve Quain, said the crash highlighted a dangerous situation.
“Drivers on Clydesdale Road can’t actually see South Coast Highway as they approach it,” he said.
“As you come over a small rise, you can only see the road straight over the intersection.”
Mr Quain said the intersection was poorly lit. A give way sign should be replaced with a stop sign and better warning of the intersection.
A local resident said minor accidents and near-misses occurred on an almost daily basis.
“There was one last night and one the night before,” he said.
“The give way sign is there and can be seen as clear as day, but people still go through it.
“The other day a woman didn’t see the sign and skidded out into the middle of the road. She was lucky there was no-one coming.”
City of Albany Mayor Milton Evans said the South Coast Highway-Clydesdale Road intersection would eventually be closed as subdivisions in the area proceeded.
“Closing the intersection could be some years away, and improved safety measures might be needed there in the meantime,” Mr Evans said.
“City staff will liaise with Main Roads and look into the options of changing the intersection to a stop sign and providing advance warning signs on the approach to the highway.”
Mr Cooper welcomed the proposal.
“I’ve nearly been cleaned up a few times,” Mr Cooper said.
Police called on drivers to exercise caution at the intersection.
