THE Great Southern Street Machine Association (GSSMA) has plans to move its Show ‘n’ Shine weekend up another gear.
Last year, the vintage, classic and custom car show proved more popular then ever when it was moved to Centennial Oval from Eyre Park.
This year, the GSSMA is planning to take it a step further with a burnout competition at Albany Speedway on the Saturday evening before the car show.
However, for it to be successful, the GSSMA needs to raise $4,000 to build a larger concrete burnout pad at the track, and is asking the general public to make donations.
“The burnout pad at the speedway is just not big enough for what we have in mind,” GSSMA president Vince Ruffo said.
“We need to attract quality cars into town and to do that we need a bigger pad for them to use.
“If people want to donate their time in the setting up of the pad, that would be great, but it’s the funds towards the extra cost of putting it down that we really need.”
Ideally, the GSSMA would like to see the new burnout pad in place by the middle of August, which will give the concrete enough time to cure, ready for the competition at the end of September.
Mr Ruffo said it was important for the GSSMA to set a precedent with the burnout competition.
“If we get it right the first time, we’ll get the support from drivers year in, year out. We’re offering good prize money, much better than in Perth.”
