Farmers take to field

19 Oct, 2009 01:33 PM
WHAT do you plant on a farm, how do you rejuvenate and revegetate it or why you bother at all?

These and plenty of other farming questions were answered when a team of experts assembled at “Outstanding in the Field” in Borden recently.

The field day was organised by North Stirlings Pallinup Natural Resources (NSPNR), which is based in Borden and a sub-region of South Coast Natural Resource Management.

The field day with a difference helped bolster spirits and garnered support for the vital landcare service in the district.

Outstanding in the Field combined the traditional field day format with a long table lunch as the group celebrated four years of ongoing landcare work, including the conclusion of the Middle Pallinup project, which saw $726,750 hit the ground in the district over a four-year period.

The NSPNR volunteer committee headed by Gnowangerup farmer Kevin Wise got to the core of the group’s business in organising the day.

Farmers and key industry personnel mixed with knowledgeable professionals in their own respective fields and visited relevant sites.

It also provided a reason for farming folk to get together to discuss the future of landcare in the Great Southern in light of recent drastic Federal Government funding cuts and key priority changes to NRM.

The long table lunch provided the perfect platform for an intense agricultural conversation in the convivial setting of the Salt River Hall, Amelup.

The day ended back at the Borden Pavilion with the South Coast NRM Roadshow.

Presentations were by Ellie Campbell (NRM Officer), SCNRM Chair Alex Campbell and Wendy Bradshaw (Biodiversity Officer) who discussed the Middle Pallinup strategic catchment project and other projects in the area.
