Family photographs wanted

27 Aug, 2009 08:48 AM
LOCAL families have been urged to dig out their old photographs for an exhibition with a difference.

Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service is organising an exhibition detailing the life and times of local Noongar people.

Health promotion officer Anita Phillips said the exhibition would be held at Albany Town Hall from September 10 to 12.

“We want people to share photos and stories, to help to connect and strengthen family, friends and community,” she said.

Photographs submitted are copied for presentation.

Noongar elder Winnie Larsen said she was proud of the young ones organising the exhibition.

“I’ve been digging around for old photographs. They are bring back a lot of memories,” she said.

Apart from remembering the past, Mrs Larsen said the photographs would also help retain Noongar culture which was being forgotten.

“It’s a way of reconnecting with the past,” she said.

“Photographs are taken in happy times.

“I had a lot of photos, especially of my auntie who was very special to me.”

Organiser Elvis Penn said it would not specifically be an exhibition about the past, as he wanted young people to submit photographs to show the present generation.

To have photos included in the exhibition, contact Anita or Ken on 9892 7222, Wendy at Bringing Them Home 9842 2797 or Harley 9842 3000.
