Endangered species help

24 Sep, 2009 09:18 AM
REGIONAL programs aiding the recovery of Gilbert’s potoroo and the elusive western ground parrot recently received State Government funding.

Environment Minister Donna Faragher said both are to share $60,000 provided through the government’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) funding.

Gilbert’s potoroo numbers in the crucial mainland population will be further monitored and the western ground parrot program will use the funds to help develop methods of managing feral cats in Fitzgerald River National Park.

“WA’s endemic species are highly valued by the community and are an integral part of our social values,” Ms Faragher said.

“Recognition of the importance of protecting biodiversity has seen strong.

“Ongoing community involvement in recovery actions for species like the western ground parrot and Gilbert’s potoroo - the value of this help and support cannot be emphasised enough.”

Mrs Faragher said the funding was part of the State Government’s $3.5million special allocation to NRM projects ready to get under way immediately.

Both the western ground parrot and Gilbert’s potoroo are found only on WA’s south coast.
