GREAT Southern Traffic Police have set their sights on suspended drivers following the success of a recent covert operation which targeted specific driving offences.
Twenty-nine people were charged with mobile phone-related traffic offences and 39 for not wearing seatbelts during Operation Tampa, which ran from June 4 to July 19.
Police employed a wide range of unmarked vehicles to stop 631 drivers. A similar undercover approach will be taken to catch drivers who persist in flouting court-imposed licence suspensions.
The Great Southern has 903 drivers with suspended licences, with 29 in Denmark, 66 in Mt Barker and 348 in Albany.
New legislation imposed on July 1 gives police the right to impound the vehicles of unlicensed drivers on the spot for 28 days.
