THE 2009 Albany Weekender Classic poster will be the first public exhibition of a local artist’s work.
Garry Clark has been painting since 1976 but has never exhibited his work, apart from having them used on several books.
“I hope people don’t get a shock with this,” Mr Clark said.
“I’m no Alexander Hills who has done the poster for so many years.”
He has no reason to worry as the Classic event organisers have been more than impressed with his poster.
Mr Clark uses vibrant colours which stand out on a garage scene involving an MG1 and an Austin 7.
Mr Clark used his vast knowledge of classic cars to develop the idea for the poster.
His love of motorsport developed from an early age when he was a mechanic for classic enthusiast Julian Cowan in Perth.
Mr Clark became a car and motorbike racer in his own right.
In recent years he has been a common sight during classic car and motorcycle event displays on Stirling Terrace in Albany, riding his penny farthing bicycle.
Albany Weekender Classic posters have become keenly-sought collector’s items over the years.
This year’s posters will be available for sale from tomorrow at the Weekender, City of Albany, Haese’s Picture Framers, Dylans on the Terrace and the Albany Visitor Centre.
Albany Weekender Classic events kick off on Saturday, May 30, with the Mt Clarence Hillclimb.
The big event, the around-the-houses style time-trial event, will once again provide a great spectacle on Sunday, May 31.
The Windfarm Road Hillclimb will be held on Monday, June 1.
