A COMMUNITY group that has raised more than $240,000 to help make life a little bit better for Great Southern children with cancer, is at it again next week.
The Children’s Cancer Care Group Albany’s next fundraising activity is a cake, produce and craft stall at Spencer Park Shopping Centre on September 18.
Since 1984, the group has helped 17 youngsters and families in their battle against cancer.
“We currently have five families in our district who we assist in various ways,” group president June Hodgson said.
“As the children’s ages are so varied – two teenagers, two primary school aged and one pre-school – their needs are very different.”
Mrs Hodgson said that as some children had a terminal illness, families were given assistance to make their child’s last months or weeks as pleasurable as possible.
This may include providing a television or video recorder so they can watch their favourite shows.
The women who make up the group have been touched personally in one way or another by a child having cancer.
One mother’s daughter who survived cancer at age two is now in her 20s and recently celebrated her wedding.
However, some group members were not so lucky and have lost children to cancer.
