Bulk carrier taken in tow

18/07/2008 11:54:00 AM
A BULK carrier disabled after allegedly running onto a reef off the Albany was towed closer to shore on Thursday.

The Atlantic Eagle became disabled after its steering was damaged when it reported hitting an object around midday on Tuesday.

A sea-going tug from Fremantle arrived late Thursday and towed the ship to out of King George Sound.

A spokesperson for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said there was no pollution as a result of the damage, but contingencies were in place in case anything developed.

On Thursday, an investigator was flown to the ship by WA Police helicopter to assess the damage.

On Friday, a team of divers was organised to make a closer assessment of the damage while it was at anchor in deep water.

The Atlantic Eagle had loaded about 20,000 tonnes of canola into two holds in Albany and was headed for Kwinana to top off its consignment.

If the damage is serious, it will have to go to Singapore for repairs.
