AN ALBANY volunteer group formed to help survivors of breast cancer get on with their lives has received an award for its efforts.
YWCA Encore’s Albany group was formed three years ago by Barb Cruickshank and Janet Huisman and has helped many women cope with being treated for breast cancer.
Mrs Cruickshank recently received The Beth Keeley Award from YWCA Encore on behalf of the group in recognition of “valuable publicity, fundraising and leadership.”
As coordinator, Mrs Cruickshank helped establish Encore’s eight-week program of light exercises, designed specifically for women who have experienced breast cancer.
“The results since we started have been fabulous,” she said.
“We have taken women away on weekend retreats, organised golfing days and sausage sizzles, and of course there has been the pink lady breakfast and purple bra day.”
Funds raised at the local events help pay for two of the four programs held in Albany each year. Others are funded by YWCA Encore.
“Ladies learn how to enjoy life again,” Mrs Cruickshank said.
