Bird stamp

10 Sep, 2009 09:26 AM
THE Noisy Scrub-bird, which inhabits the Albany region, is being celebrated by Australia Post.

It is included in the Australian Songbirds stamp issue released yesterday.

The four stamps in the issue feature depictions of native songbirds by leading wildlife artist Christopher Pope.

The other birds featured are the Green Catbird, native to northern Queensland and the central NSW coast, the Mangrove Golden Whistler, which can be found along Australia’s northern coastline, and the Scarlet Honeyeater, which inhabits much of Australia’s eastern coastline.

The release of this stamp issue coincides with the centenary of the pioneering Gould League (1909–2009), with two of the featured birds – the Noisy Scrub-bird and the Mangrove Golden Whistler – being described by John Gould, after whom the League was named.

Englishman John Gould (1804–1881) is regarded Australia’s father of ornithology, courtesy of his comprehensive research on Australian birds in the mid-19th century, during which he identified as many as 328 species.

The Gould League is an independent not-for-profit organisation dedicated to environmental education and training in sustainability.
