ALBANY Police will increase their presence along all major highways and arterial roads in an effort to curb the rising road toll, with many motorists out enjoying the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
Great Southern Traffic Sergeant Nigel Fiander said police would be out in force in a concerted effort to make sure drivers were doing it safely.
“Fatalities are up in the district this year and police don’t want this to increase, especially over the long weekend,” he said.
“Additional patrols will be sent to significant crash risk areas, which means known speeding areas along major highways, and open areas will be targeted over the weekend.
“We are also on the lookout for suspended drivers using our licence recognition guns.”
Sgt Fiander also reminded drivers to manage their fatigue levels over the weekend.
“Take regular breaks and don’t take risks,” he said.
“If there is a slow-moving vehicle, overtake the car at an appropriate time, drive safely and within the traffic laws.”
Double demerit points also come into effect from midnight on Friday, September 25, until midnight on Monday, September 28.
