ALBANY nurses are being recognised for their work in the community, with one winning a national award and another reaching the finals in her chosen field.
Diabetes nurse Shirley Cornelius won the Australian Diabetes Educators Association’s Jan Baldwin Award at a conference in Adelaide recently.
She was awarded the prize for her significant contribution to improving the health and well being of people with diabetes.
Ms Cornelius has been nursing for 42 years and has spent more than half of that time focusing on educating people with diabetes.
She is the coordinator of the Great Southern integrated diabetes education service.
“To be nominated for any award is an honour, but to be nominated by your peers is very special and it was a very great honour to actually win,” Ms Cornelius said.
Great Southern Palliative Care coordinator Lesley Forrester just missed out after being one of three finalists short-listed in the Rural and Remote Nurse of the Year category.
Ms Forrester became palliative care coordinator 10 years ago and has been pivotal in developing the service across the region.
