Albany authorities 'terrorist-ready'.

ALBANY’s emergency services participated in a counter-terrorist security exercise last week.

The exercise was conducted at Albany Port on Friday in partnership with all major emergency and policing services.

Agencies included the Albany Port, Albany Police, FESA, St John’s Ambulance Service, Fortitude Security and Svitzer Australia.

All agencies worked together on a real-time situation involving a terrorist who took hostages.

Detective Sergeant Mark McKenzie said agencies were training for a situation that could arise in Albany.

“We have critical infrastructure here and there is no reason why this couldn’t happen,” he said.

Sgt McKenzie said during the exercise the male terrorist took two hostages aboard a boat.

“Armed police became involved who were able to get one hostage from the tug boat.

“He shot one hostage and then police took him into custody.

“After letting off a bomb FESA took control at this point.”

Sgt McKenzie said numerous stakeholders assisted in the exercise that included 30 police officers from throughout the district.

“The police were the lead agency in responding to the situation and we proved today if the situation arises we are prepared.”

Albany Port’s Steve Young said it was a unique opportunity for all emergency services agencies to act together.

“It was a great opportunity to get all the emergency agencies and port contractors to work together on a real-life scenario.”

FESA district manager Kevin Parsons said it was a great opportunity for police and fire fighters to work together and learn each other’s ways.

“A lot of preparation went into the exercise and it was a great opportunity to work with other emergency services,” he said.
