Adventurer plans next challenge

THE ink is barely dry on the record books and Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov is already planning his next attack on the Antartica Cup Racetrack.

Konyukhov and his support team flew home to Moscow on Monday after completing the inaugural Antarctica Cup Ocean Race last Wednesday.

Cup chairman Bob Williams said Konyukhov will make a formal announcement in about one month.

However, he understands that the Russian is planning to return to Albany to complete the Racetrack on board a new, 50 metre, crewed vessel.

Meanwhile, his yacht, Trading Network Alye Parusa, will remain in Albany over winter tied up on a buoy in Princess Royal Harbour.

Mr Williams said it will be available for other competitors to charter.

Konyukhov received a true hero’s welcome when he arrived back in Albany after 102 days, 56 minutes and 50 seconds of sailing the racetrack around Antarctica.

About 100 people packed the Town Jetty to see him presented with the Antarctica Cup by Mr Williams.

He also received a medal and St George’s ribbon (for victory) from the Russian Federation, and Albany Mayor Milton Evans presented him with gifts from the community.

World Sailing Speed Record Federation representative Jack Baxter officially witnessed Konyukhov’s completion of the racetrack.
